Porto Football Tour 2017

Prince William School PE Department ran their first ever football tour to Porto, Portugal in June. Mr Baron, Mr Owen and Mr Brooks took thirty five students from Years 7 to 10. The students were divided into three teams, Under 13’s, Under 14’s and Under 15’s.

The opportunity to play football in Portugal, the home of the 2016 European Champions, filled everyone with excitement!

After an early morning flight from Stanstead, and after many hours of planning and organising it was fantastic to be finally on our way to Portugal.  We touched down before mid-day only to be whisked away by coach to a large Porto shopping mall. The boys on the trip wasted no time at all in spending their holiday money on Porto football shirts and the like!

In the afternoon it was straight onto training at the fantastic Vitalis Park operated by Dragon Force Football Academy. The boys were all kitted out in brand new attire and were thrown straight into training,  gallons of water were consumed during the tour! The coaching throughout the tour was of a fantastic quality led by energetic, enthusiastic and patient coaches.

In the evening it was back to the hotel, Axis Ofir Resort, 30 miles away from Porto, located right on the beach! The boys were very happy with the hotel which boasted an outdoor pool (perfect for relaxing in after a day’s hard training), a bowling alley and evening entertainment. Most evenings were spent relaxing with friends, playing tennis, playing more football and eating in the brilliant hotel dining room.

Over the coming days the boys and staff had a fantastic time experiencing everything the Portuguese culture had to offer. The bulk of their time was obviously spent either training or playing against Dragon Force teams. Overall the team had a 50%-win rate scoring fourteen goals and conceding thirteen – so a clear victory for Prince William School!  The most successful team on the tour was Mr Baron’s U14’s team who played two and won two!

On Sunday the boys were treated to a tour of the Porto football stadium where they learnt about the history of the club, visited the museum and stared in awe at the silverware that the club had amassed in their glittering trophy room.

Overall, the boys behaved and performed in an exemplary way throughout the tour and we look forward to the next tour – wherever that may be!
