The BTEC course will give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport or related areas. BTEC will give learners the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

The students will study units from the following topics:

Unit Mandatory units – all three units must be taken:

  3. Sport and Exercise Psychology 10 3
  4. Unit Optional units – three units must be taken from:
  5. Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences 12 Sports Nutrition
  6. Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences 13 Current Issues in Sport
  7. Sports Biomechanics in Action 14 Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
  8. Exercise, Health and Lifestyle 15 Sports Injuries
  9. Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise 16 Sports Coaching*
  10. Fitness Training and Programming 17 Practical Individual Sports* *only one of these can be chosen
  11. Sport and Exercise Massage 18 Practical Team Sports*

Entry Requirements:

Beyond the minimum entry criteria for Level 3 learning of 5 A*-C GCSE grades, students will also be expected to achieve a minimum B grade in their theory at GCSE Physical Education or a Merit in BTEC Sport . If PE was not completed then candidates who achieved ‘B’ grades in their Sciences will be considered on an individual basis.
The course is a two year pathway and is not split in to AS/A2, both years must be completed.


Students will be regularly participating or undertaking a role in at least one sport. Students will develop independence to their learning by consolidating classroom work through annotation of notes and summarising key points. Students will spend an hour in private study for every hour taught. Students will engage in classroom discussion developing and applying their knowledge. The course requires the students to complete areas of coursework and work on these aspects independently, these will be continually assessed throughout the year, they will be required to submit the coursework for corrections and then keep to all deadline dates.

Extra-Curricular Activities/Independent Learning Opportunities:

The Physical Education department runs a range of inter school fixtures for students to participate in. There will be opportunities to see elite performers through high quality events to games. There are planned trips to revision/ study sessions to augment in school learning. Alongside the BTEC course the Department runs the Sports Leaders programme which enables students to develop and gain a wide range of practical skills, students will also have the opportunity to take a first aid qualification.

Career Pathways:

The course has an array of career possibilities not only in sport and recreation but also in the tertiary sector such as the Police, Army, and Physiotherapy. Those students who continue onto university could select Physical Education teaching or a Sports Science related degree, the latter includes components such as management, coaching and outdoor recreation.

Good combinations of other subject to study with PE are:

Biology, Psychology, Sociology and Sports Leaders.

Student Testimonials:

This course is a new one to the school and will be running instead of the A Level equivalent so as of yet there are no testimonials. The BTEC course, however, will give students the opportunity to cover First Aid and Sports Leaders which are both valuable assets to have on both CVs and UCAS statements as many students have demonstrated in the past.
