KS3 curriculum

During Key Stage 3 students work to realistic design briefs. These involve exploring different methods of research that can provide a designer with the information needed to produce relevant and creative designs for products made from textiles. Once a final design solution has been decided upon, a pattern is produced, often by making a paper model of the product. After considering a range of decorative textile techniques, construction methods and fabric properties, the product is made up as a prototype and evaluated. Textiles is part of the Design carousel and students will experience the subject for two or three x12 week courses throughout Key Stage 3 in line with the other areas in the carousel.

SKILLS TAUGHT:

  • To use a sewing machine and other equipment appropriately and safely
  • Research skills e.g. needs of the target audience, theme board, product analysis
  • Accurate measuring and cutting
  • How to create 3D products from 2D materials
  • Analysis and evaluative skills
  • Construction and decorative techniques e.g. applique, dye work
  • Organising and managing time and resources
